Second pilot from downed F-15 jet rescued in Iran

The second U.S. pilot from the F-15 shot down over Iran has been rescued by U.S. special forces, according to multiple reports.

The Wall Street Journal reported that U.S. forces extracted the pilot from Iran with the help of air cover. All forces involved in the rescue mission are safe and out of Iranian airspace, according to U.S. officials.

The successful mission caps an end to a search-and-rescue operation that began on Friday after Iranian forces downed the U.S. aircraft while over Iranian airspace. One pilot was rescued at the time, while the second went missing until early Sunday.

Iran was simultaneously hunting for the pilot, and a U.S. official told Al Jazeera that U.S. forces faced a “heavy firefight” during the rescue mission.
