Zelensky teases meeting with Trump during UN General Assembly session

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky teased a meeting with President Donald Trump this week as he prepares for “an intense week” and a “week of diplomacy” at the United Nations General Assembly session.

The supposed meeting between the two leaders comes as the U.N. begins its “high-level” week.

Zelensky announced the meeting with Trump in a post on X on Sunday. The Ukrainian president hoped to discuss proposals with world leaders to help end his country’s war with Russia. He mentioned he already had over “two dozen” meetings scheduled with “everyone who has long supported Ukraine” and “new partners.”

“We are now preparing for a very intense week – a week of diplomacy,” Zelensky said. “We can accomplish a lot if our partners hear us and support proposals that truly bring the end of the war closer.”

“It will be the week of the UN General Assembly – with various events and meetings,” Zelensky said. “The schedule already includes nearly two dozen meetings with leaders from different countries, from all parts of the world – with everyone who has long supported Ukraine and with our new partners. The first meetings are already tomorrow.”

The U.N. will begin its week with a “high-level meeting” to commemorate the organization’s 80th anniversary, which was officially founded in October 1945, over two months after the conclusion of World War II. The “General Debate” portion of the meeting will last from Sept. 23 to 29.

Zelensky then mentioned his planned meeting with Trump, in which many things related to the war with Russia will be discussed. He specifically highlighted having a conversation about the return of the Ukrainian children abducted by Russia. It will be the first meeting between Trump and Zelensky since they met at the White House in August after Trump met with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

“We also plan this week a meeting with the President of the United States,” Zelensky said. “There will be an important event on the return of Ukrainian children abducted by Russia – a truly global summit on this issue. It is vital that this week strengthens the world’s resolve for robust action – because without strength, peace will not prevail.”

The U.N. meeting comes after Russia continued its intense bombing of Ukraine with drones and missiles this week. It also comes approximately a week after Ukraine hit Russia’s oil fields and refineries in drone attacks, which, according to some reports, have caused some Russian companies to consider decreasing their output. Zelensky called on world leaders to implement “strong sanctions and pressure against Russia.”

“Russia must feel the consequences of what it is doing,” Zelensky said in a post on early Sunday morning. “Sufficient counteraction is needed to force them to seek peace. That can be achieved with adequate strength of our army, our long-range strike capabilities, and strong sanctions and pressure against Russia.”

“Right now, we are defending ourselves from Russian attacks almost every day,” Zelensky said. “This week alone, there were more than 1,500 strike drones, over 1,280 guided aerial bombs, and 50 missiles of various types. Thousands of foreign components have been found in this weaponry – more than 132,000 items – from many countries: Europe, the United States, China, Japan, and dozens of others.”

“If Russia is not stopped, this will surely become a threat to the countries of Europe and the Indo-Pacific,” Zelensky added.
