Week Too Late: Sen. Schumer Vows Vote to Block Venezuela Action Next Week

After the capture and arrest of Venezuelan dictator and cartel leader Maduro, the untiring gentlemen of the Senate, led by Sen. Chuck Schumer, have vowed to pass a resolution blocking any action against Venezuela.

Sen. Schumer, Sen. Adam Schiff, Sen. Tim Kaine, Hillary’s former VP, and Sen. Rand Paul are teaming up on a resolution to try and turn back the clock. No word on whether it will ask for Maduro’s return.

While Congress has a legitimate role in declaring war, this resolution is stupid and destructive to the point of being treasonous.

President Trump has signaled that he’s not pursuing regime change. Instead of backing Machado, he’s treating Maduro’s VP as the current leader of Venezuela. The goal here is to pressure the regime into ending the drug trafficking, rather than regime change.

This Senate resolution undermines the leverage Trump gained from capturing Maduro to stop something that seemingly isn’t happening anyway. If actual regime change were on the agenda, it would be happening now. The regime has been undermined, but it hasn’t fallen. And the Democrats and Libertarians pursuing this resolution are just undermining Trump’s leverage to stop drug trafficking out of Venezuela which paradoxically makes a military confrontation and regime change more likely.
