Trump ‘would like’ to discuss immigration with ‘surprise choice’ Pope Leo

President Donald Trump told Fox News’s Sean Hannity that he is open to discussing immigration issues with the first American pope, Leo XIV.

Since becoming the leader of the Catholic Church, Leo has not mentioned Trump’s immigration policies. However, an X account belonging to Cardinal Robert Prevost, the pope’s previous name and title, shared articles and statements made by other church leaders criticizing Trump’s immigration policies.

As part of his campaign promise, Trump intends to deport millions of illegal immigrants, and the president has already deported tens of thousands in his first few months in office.

The X account shared an article in 2015 written by Cardinal Timothy Dolan in which he called Trump’s “anti-immigration” policies “problematic.”

WHAT TO EXPECT FROM TRUMP’S MASS DEPORTATION PLAN

Trump’s immigration policies previously garnered criticism from the late Pope Francis, who urged voters to choose between the lesser of the two evils during the 2024 election.

During Trump’s interview with Hannity, the president called Leo a “surprise choice.” Trump wrote on Truth Social after the pope was elected that their meeting would be a “very meaningful moment.”
