Sophie Starkova: Comparing Grokipedia and Wikipedia

The great “Ministry of Truth,” Wikipedia, is finally being exposed for exactly what it is: a woke tool designed to tell you what you should think. And who is drawing the curtain back? None other than the competitor, Grokipedia. A little healthy competition is just what the doctor ordered.

Of course, getting your hand caught in the cookie jar usually comes with some crying — mainly because you got caught — and often some lying for damage control. That is exactly what the Left is doing in response to the newly released AI model, Grokipedia, launched by Elon Musk’s company xAI.

Just the title tells you everything you need to know from Wired’s article on the topic: “Elon Musk’s Grokipedia Pushes Far-Right Talking Points.” Talk about saying the quiet part out loud. I suppose facts are now considered “far-right.” Well, since we have been right so far, that may work. Here are two of the things Wired presumed to be false:

  1. Porn use has fueled sexual degeneracy across our culture, which has inevitably led to more sexually transmitted diseases.
  2. Transgenderism is a social contagion, or a fad, pushed by blitz marketing across the internet in recent years.

Neither of those claims is false. You can certainly debate to what extent porn contributed to the rise of STDs or to what extent the internet has added to the fad of transgenderism, but the claims themselves are valid.

Unlike Wikipedia, Grokipedia does not allow human edits. It relies on X’s Grok LLM to fact-check for accuracy, and it allows users to send feedback if they think an entry is in error. So far, it seems to be doing a decent job. Speaking of errors, Wikipedia quite effectively made the case for why an alternative is so needed by dredging up Elon Musk’s supposed “Nazi salute” in its article on the new model.

Many are pointing out some pretty big differences between the two, strengthening that argument. Regarding January 6, Wikipedia calls it an “attempted coup,” framing it as a premeditated plot by Donald Trump. By contrast, Grokipedia calls it a riot, citing security failures, crowd breaches, and prosecutions without assigning political intent.

George Floyd is another obvious example of how Wikipedia is pushing a narrative. Wikipedia’s version says Floyd was murdered by a white police officer, with no mention of Floyd’s history or the context of the situation. Derek Chauvin was indeed convicted of murder, but that was not without serious controversy. Grokipedia, on the other hand, is far more detailed, describing Floyd’s criminal history, the complications surrounding his death, and not even mentioning race at all.

Probably the most stark exposure of the left-wing bias in Wikipedia is in relation to gender. Grokipedia starts its article on the topic with a simple statement: “Gender refers to the binary classification of humans as male or female based on biological sex.” Wikipedia starts with this doozy: “Gender is the range of social, psychological, cultural, and behavioral aspects of being a man (or boy), woman (or girl), or third gender.” What’s funny, but actually incredibly scary, is that The Washington Post labeled Grokipedia’s entry on gender as “right-leaning.” If biological facts are considered to be “right-leaning,” then, as comedian Bill Engvall used to say, “here’s your sign.”

While Grokipedia is a huge improvement over the left-wing, censoring, “politically correct” mob running Wikipedia, it will not be without its faults. Some have pointed to the early gaffes with Grok chatbot as examples of what could happen with Grokipedia, but Musk confirmed those as coding errors and remedied the issues. Since Grokipedia has only 885,000 articles, whereas the English-language Wikipedia has more than eight million, the new AI model will rely heavily on information from … Wikipedia. Then again, all major AI systems train on freely licensed Wikipedia content; the difference is that Elon is doing the work to “purge out the propaganda.”

It will take time to build this alternative to Wikipedia, but it is absolutely imperative that it exists. Musk announced his intention to build Grokipedia after Silicon Valley investor David Sacks called Wikipedia out on X, “Wikipedia is hopelessly biased. An army of left-wing activists maintain the bios and fight reasonable corrections. Magnifying the problem, Wikipedia often appears first in Google search results, and now it’s a trusted source for AI model training. This is a huge problem.”

Wikipedia co-founder, Jimmy Wales, doesn’t have high expectations of the new Grokipedia. AI language models “aren’t good enough to write encyclopedia articles,” he says. “There will be a lot of errors.” I think I’ll take coding errors over gaslighting and lies.

Elon gave us an alternative to leftist Twitter, and now he’s giving us an alternative to woke Wikipedia. Despite the naysayers and critics, this is welcome news in the fight for truth, transparency, free speech, and freedom from the tyranny of the mob.
