Samantha Koch: Sweeney vs. Erivo — A Tale of Two Outrages

The recent culture‑war spectacle involves the unhinged leftist reaction to the Sydney Sweeney American Eagle ad, branded by critics as “Nazi propaganda,” contrasted with the portrayal of Jesus Christ by Cynthia Erivo in a revival of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “Jesus Christ Superstar.” This stark and disturbing double standard illustrates the moral and cultural decline that we’ve been witnessing for a long time, and it offers one more example of why more American voters are leaving the Left and gravitating toward Donald Trump and the GOP.

In July, American Eagle released a full ad campaign featuring Sweeney under the slogan “Sydney Sweeney has great jeans.” It’s a dad joke — a pun on genes and jeans. In one scene, Sweeney states, “Genes are passed down … determining traits like hair color, personality, and even eye color. My jeans are blue.” Left-wing voices across all social media platforms immediately seized on what they saw as a brazen attempt to racialize traditional beauty standards, with her blonde hair and blue eyes evoking disturbing echoes of a pro-eugenics narrative.

Critics called these ads “supremacist dog whistles” and “Nazi propaganda.” Le Monde quoted one such response from TikTok account GenericArtDad: “The new American Eagle Ad with Sydney Sweeney? That’s Eugenics. Nazi propaganda. And it’s blatant. Like, you don’t even need media literacy. It’s that on the nose obvious.” The reaction from the Left was so intense that some commentators described the campaign as “genuinely terrifying.” Not due to any violence, mind you, but simply because they thought it celebrated white racial identity markers.

In response to yet another hysterical reaction by the opposing party, conservatives didn’t hesitate to call out the insanity. Senator Ted Cruz wrote on X, “Now the crazy Left has come out against beautiful women. I’m sure that will poll well.” JD Vance was amused that Democrats have learned nothing from their big loss in 2024: “My political advice to the Democrats is continue to tell everybody who thinks Sydney Sweeney is attractive is a Nazi.”

President Trump also weighed in, saying, “Ooh, now I love her ad” when told the actress is a registered Republican. Megyn Kelly also defended Sweeney, praising her as natural, while contrasting her with other manufactured celebrities. “She’s the opposite of a Kardashian,” Kelly said. “She hasn’t Kardashianed herself.”

American Eagle rightly insisted the ad was always about jeans and confidence, not genes or supremacy.

At roughly the same moment that so-called liberals were booking emergency therapy appointments to deal with the sight of a white blonde woman selling clothing items, the same establishment questioned why Broadway star Cynthia Erivo, a queer, bisexual, black woman, playing Jesus Christ in “Jesus Christ Superstar” at the Hollywood Bowl was offensive to anyone. They mocked the negative reaction from Christians who called the depiction “blasphemous.”

Political analyst Ben Shapiro, who is Jewish, lays out the clear double standard in detail. “They took all the things that Jesus Christ was not,” Shapiro argued, “and morphed them into what the Left wishes Jesus Christ were. The whole goal of this production at the Hollywood Bowl was to be completely subversive of Christianity, and to supplant traditional values with the values of the far-Left social sphere.”

Shapiro explains that no critic on the Left called this portrayal offensive, even though it fundamentally breaks with most traditional descriptions of Christ throughout history. Yet conservatives who raise objections are instantly demonized as bigots or Christian supremacists.

He also connects the stark reactions and outlines how this exact shift in priorities by the Left is why they are seeing the lowest approval ratings for their party since the early 1990s. “The backlash to the left‑wing view that everything must be subverted,” Shapiro said, “is why when Donald Trump said ‘Make America Great Again,’ all he really meant … was ‘Stop this stuff.’”

While the Left has built its entire platform on being anti-conservative, now, the MAGA movement is largely made up of supporters who just want a return to normalcy. They are trying to avoid going over the anti-morality cliff. Today’s Democrats seem eager to jump off of it.

What unites these two controversies is not superficial aesthetics, but ideological incoherence. The same liberal voices who decry celebrating conventionally beautiful white women as “Nazi propaganda” are celebrating the intentional sabotage of sacred Christian symbols in the name of identity politics. From a sane and rational standpoint, it reveals a very clear moral decline — truth and tradition are being sacrificed on the altar of political allegiance. It’s not just inconsistency; it’s the elevation of party over true conviction.

In short, Americans are waking up to the woke lines that are being drawn. If you celebrate timeless values — beauty, faith, nation — you are attacked. If you invert everything sacred — church, gender, history — you’re praised. That’s not progress or enlightenment; it’s the wolves herding the lambs.

Anyone with a semblance of a moral compass should see in these two episodes more than theater or ads. They’re snapshots of broader cultural currents. Fortunately, those currents may be shifting voters toward right-leaning candidates who promise to restore moral sanity, defend our Judeo-Christian Western heritage, and reject ideology masquerading as art. That is why Democrats are losing popularity, and why more voters are supporting Trump and those who align with him. The moral incoherence and hypocrisy are no longer tolerable to millions of Americans, particularly those of faith.
