The anti-immigration-enforcement riots that began this past weekend in Los Angeles have spread to other cities. “Mostly peaceful” protesters are also causing mayhem in Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Dallas, New York City, and elsewhere. Predictably, the LA rioters have become looters as they “solve” the problem of deportations by stealing shoes and cellphones.
Take that, Donald Trump!
In what I’m sure is completely unrelated news, CNN chief data analyst Harry Enten noted on Tuesday, “There is no block of voters that shifted more to the right from 2020 to 2024 than immigrant voters.” The numbers: In 2020, Democrats led among immigrant citizens by 32 points. Today, the GOP leads by eight points. That’s a 40-point swing.
As I mentioned on Monday, Trump’s highest approval rating is among Hispanics. How ironic that open borders repelled precisely the people Democrats thought they were pandering to.
Obviously, I was kidding above — the polls and immigration upheaval are definitely related. As it turns out, legal immigrants don’t appreciate the Democrat/Leftmedia effort to conflate their legal presence with the intentional invasion of illegals Joe Biden and Kamala Harris facilitated for four years. They do appreciate efforts to maintain an orderly system, which they themselves took pains to follow. Watching others skip the line is infuriating.
On the other hand, you have leftists rioting and screaming about “authoritarianism.” That happens when you have a full term in which President Autopen deliberately did not enforce the law, allowing upwards of 10 million illegals to flood into the country, and then you have President Donald Trump come in and do what he said he’d do — enforce the law, including by deporting illegals. As California Democrat Governor Gavin Newsom put it in a statewide speech yesterday, “What we’re witnessing is not law enforcement; it’s authoritarianism.”
Law enforcement looks like tyranny to anarchists. To the rest of us, it looks like restoring the Rule of Law.
As if to illustrate the differing worldviews here, consider how the Leftmedia is covering events. Videos of the riots “can give people a false impression of what’s actually happening,” warned CNN’s Brian Stelter because those videos may be “hours old, or even days old.” Who are you gonna believe — CNN or your lying eyes?
Speaking of videos, don’t miss the montage of media figures talking about all the “peaceful people” at the riots.
When it comes to the actions of executive leaders, the story is also different. For example, NBC News frets over Trump’s authority to deploy the National Guard and Marines to secure federal property and functions, including defending ICE agents because California’s sanctuary law handicaps LA cops from assisting them.
Trump has constitutional and statutory authority for his actions thus far, and he even warned that he could use the Insurrection Act for further action.
The only insurrection Democrats have ever heard of was the riot on January 6. For that few-hour clash with Capitol Police, they impeached Trump a second time and kept National Guard troops in Washington, DC, for months.
On the other hand, when LA Mayor Karen Bass, a Democrat, imposed a curfew in light of all the looting, Leftmedia headlines were more passive — “curfew imposed in LA,” said The New York Times. Bass gets a pass because she blames Trump: “The White House instigated this by having ICE raids in our city.”
Yeah, that’s it.
Meanwhile, as rioters wreak havoc in his state, Governor Newsom is having a field day complaining about … Trump’s supposed “threat to democracy.” He ripped the president in his speech, saying, “Trump, without consulting California leaders, commandeered 2,000 of our state’s National Guard members to deploy on our streets illegally and for no reason. This brazen abuse of power by a sitting president enflamed a combustible situation, putting our people, our officers, and even our National Guard at risk.” He claimed that democracy is “under assault” by a president “who wants to be bound by no law or constitution.”
Illegally? Wrong. For no reason? Wrong again. The “combustible situation” was because protesters on his side of the political divide were lighting things on fire. Trump is working to put out the flames. Literally. He’s doing so while enforcing the law, not ignoring it like Biden did. When Newsom sued Trump over the Guard deployment, he lost — at least in the immediate.
Trump gave his own speech on Tuesday at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. He called the riots “a full-blown assault on peace, on public order and national sovereignty,” being “carried out by rioters bearing foreign flags with the aim of continuing a foreign invasion of our country.” He promised to “liberate” LA. “Generations of Army heroes did not shed their blood on distant shores only to watch our country be destroyed by invasion and third-world lawlessness here at home,” he added. “I want to applaud the courage and the strength of the incredible troops who are right now standing guard to protect federal property and personnel and uphold the supremacy of federal law.”
Pointedly, he noted, “The only flag that will wave triumphant over the streets of Los Angeles is the American flag.”
That might outrage America-hating leftists more than anything else.
Dems never had the moral high ground. This is the party of slavery, Jim Crow, abortion, and gender mutilation. Burning cities is totally on brand. https://t.co/I4USuIDHwz
