A financial expert is urging Americans to dramatically rethink their holiday shopping lists, including cutting out gifts for adult extended family members, as families across the country brace for Christmas gift shopping.
Appearing on Fox News, personal finance coach Jade Warshaw warned viewers to rein in spending and prioritize children when setting a holiday budget.
“Budget, budget, budget, you need a plan. Also remember, adults don’t need gifts, okay? Focus on the people in your life who are age 3 to 18. Grandma doesn’t need slippers. If they don’t live by you, don’t get them a gift,” Warshaw told host Dana Perino.
“Now’s not the time to spend and break the bank sending packages across the country, Dana. Focus on the people in your life ages 3 to 18. That’s my 30 seconds for you.”
Warshaw, a co-host of The Ramsey Show, framed the advice as a practical strategy during a season when many families are struggling with higher prices and tighter budgets.
Her comments set off a wave of incredulous reactions on X, where users mocked and criticized the suggestion.
“Your lonely old grandma on a fixed income doesn’t need to know you’re thinking of her,” one user posting as Lulu Addict wrote.
“No Christmas slippers for grandma in ‘the greatest economy ever?’ That’s harsh,” Robert Heath commented.
Others framed the advice as an attack on tradition.
“Sounds like a war on Christmas,” another X user quipped.
Some took a lighter tone: “Not giving a gift to Grandma is a terrible advice. She may strike you out of her will,” @CholericCleric said.
One X commenter said: “Scrooge endorses this message.”

Another user, The Spiritual Shift, compared the message to dystopian fiction: “OMG, we are heading towards the Hunger Games.”
Warshaw’s tough-love advice, especially the line about grandma, may have landed awkwardly with some viewers. Still, it highlights the broader anxiety many families feel as they head into the holiday shopping season.
