Order Robert Spencer’s new book, Holy Hell: Islam’s Abuse of Women and the Infidels Who Enable It: HERE.
Anyone who has been paying attention could have seen this coming a mile away. New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani is not just a socialist, he’s a communist. That means that, contrary to all his stirring rhetoric about fighting for the common people and making the city affordable, what he really wants to do is destroy the city and make the people suffer. And from that standpoint, after a month in office, he is doing a bang-up job: after the great blizzard that New York and much of the nation recently experienced, the city is awash in garbage.
Now, you may think that saying that communists want their people to suffer and to destroy cities is a bit of rhetorical excess from an anti-communist, but in reality, 178 years after The Communist Manifesto, the record is clear and consistent. Communists are revolutionaries, and revolution requires violent disruption of the existing order. To bring about that disruption, the masses have to be convinced that this existing order is intolerable, and so the chaos and disturbances of the revolutionary period are worth enduring in order to institute a regime that is, at least theoretically, more just and equitable.
It has also been shown, however, in the Soviet Union, Communist China, Castro’s Cuba and every other Communist regime that has ever plagued the earth, the ruling class is uniformly hypocritical. Communist leaders preach the moral necessity of placing everyone on the same economic footing, which in practice means that everyone lives in the same squalid apartment blocks and has access to the same poor-quality goods. Everyone, that is, except the leaders themselves, who sun themselves in beachfront villas and drive the latest capitalist sports cars while the hapless denizens of their workers’ paradise huddle in hovels and crowd into squalid public transportation.
And so any way you slice it, Communism is about suffering, and so Comrade Mayor Mamdani has set out energetically to ensure that New Yorkers are experiencing as much suffering as he can possibly inflict upon them. He has no intention, however, of sharing in the sorrows of his constituents. The New York Post reported Sunday that “eight-foot-high piles of rat-infested trash are choking the streets around Gracie Mansion — while Hizzoner’s new home has gotten the white-glove shoveling treatment.”
Once again like all Communist rulers, as the garbage piles ever higher on the snow-choked streets, Comrade Mayor is insisting that his victims, er, that is, constituents never had it so good. The Post notes that he has “crowed that he can’t ‘imagine how it could get better’ in the city, even as more and more New Yorkers are blasting the lack of ‘collectivism’ in the Big Apple. The mayor’s Upper East Side neighbors are being forced to trudge through garbage-plagued streets, roaming rodents and mounds of snow tainted with dog pee a full week after Winter Storm Fern.”
The Upper East Side is a wealthy area, and so this was completely predictable. Mamdani famously vowed during his campaign to target “richer and whiter neighborhoods” with higher taxes, and now it is clear that higher taxes are not all the luckless residents of those neighborhoods are going to have to pay.
Mamdani knows, meanwhile, that no matter how high the garbage piles become, a significant portion of city residents will continue to nod along when he tells them how good they have it. Leftism is not a sober assessment of the political and social scene, and a rational approach to solving the problems that any given political entity may face. Instead, it is an ersatz secular religion, a substitute for the real thing for leftists who think that they’re beyond those benighted ways of thinking.
And in this fake religion, the leader has numinous status. It is a core article of the leftist faith that all people are equal, but Zohran Mamdani, like Kim Jong Un and Chairman Mao and Comrade Stalin and all the rest, is more equal than others. New Yorkers who believe in their callow communist mayor aren’t going to let a few towers of garbage bags shake their faith. They know that their dear leader loves them, and has their very best interests at heart. A society of perfect justice and equity is just around the corner. It should arrive any day now. Any day now.
