Modern air travel is pretty miserable and one underlying issue is that while some of the technology has been updated, very little real progress has been made.
Airline speeds flattened out in the 70s. Modern airlines spend most of their time trying to compete on flight costs on comparison sites while finding new ways to squeeze flyers for every dollar.
But what if rapid air travel were actually possible?
We might find out now that President Trump lifted the supersonic ban from the 1970s. The order is called Making Aviation Great Again. And it could open the door to doing just that. The 70s supersonic ban had its reasons.
And the current move doesn’t open the door to supersonic aircraft smashing windows, instead it pins it to the noise level and allows for more sophisticated aircraft capable of avoiding the old supersonic boom smashing windows problem.
I can’t say that the tech is really there yet, but now there may be an opportunity to find out. Commercial supersonic flights will require a lot, but the payoffs down the road could be incredible.
Imagine actual rapid flights and airport turnarounds which could do for air travel what the modern jet age did back in the day. We’re a long way from being there, but this makes it more possible.
