Stating the obvious.
No one who knows anything about the Middle East seriously thought that Arab Muslim armies would be securing Gaza, let alone disarming Hamas, but the King of Jordan, who lives in fear of the Muslim Brotherhood, the parent organization of Hamas, taking over the part of Israel that the British appointed his family to rule, said it out loud.
Countries would reject being asked to “enforce” peace in Gaza if deployed under the Trump ceasefire plan, King Abdullah of Jordan has told the BBC.
“What is the mandate of security forces inside of Gaza? And we hope that it is peacekeeping, because if it’s peace enforcing, nobody will want to touch that,” said King Abdullah in an exclusive interview for BBC Panorama.
“Peacekeeping is that you’re sitting there supporting the local police force, the Palestinians, which Jordan and Egypt are willing to train in large numbers, but that takes time. If we’re running around Gaza on patrol with weapons, that’s not a situation that any country would like to get involved in.”
That’s not ‘peacekeeping’. Or rather it’s the UN definition of peacekeeping which falls somewhere between the passively useless and the actively malicious (e.g. UNIFIL’s aggressive protection of Hezbollah which recently escalated to downing an Israeli drone) support for terrorists.
Jordan will ‘train’ ‘Palestinian’ police. Who will those ‘police’ be? Well we’ve already been told. They’ll be some combo of the PLO, Hamas or other Islamic terror groups. What will supporting them consist of? Most likely opposing Israel.
King Abdullah said he would not send Jordanian forces into Gaza because his country was “too close politically” to the situation.
Nor will anyone else except supporters of Hamas in support of Hamas.
There’s two options here.
Let Israel finish Hamas
Play out this fantasy in which someone other than us, preferably a Muslim country will actually try to reform Gaza. And all evidence is that this is a non-starter. We shouldn’t be doing it and no one else will actually disarm Hamas.
This is why wars are endless because they’re left undone. ‘Peacemakers’ make for endless wars. Winners finish wars.
