How to celebrate Memorial Day in the DC metro area

Many Americans will kick off their summer excursions by honoring fallen soldiers over the long weekend.

Here’s how you can make the most of this Memorial Day.

The National Memorial Day Parade

The National Memorial Day Parade will take place in Washington, D.C., on Constitution Ave. NW between 7th and 17th Streets on Monday, May 26, at 2:00 p.m.

Musical performances will be held ahead of the parade at 1:00 p.m.

If you can’t travel, the parade will be broadcast live on TV and on the American Veterans Center YouTube channel.

Arlington National Cemetery

The 157th National Memorial Day Observance will be held at 11 a.m. at ANC’s Memorial Amphitheater.

The United States Marine Band and the U.S. Navy Band Sea Chanters are set to perform, and tickets are free but are on a first-come, first-served basis.

ANC is also giving tours of the cemetery where flags were placed on the graves of over 250,000 service members.

Decorating the graves of service members with flags and flowers is a tradition that started after the Civil War, giving Memorial Day its original name, Decoration Day.

Tours start at 2 p.m.

National Mall Memorials

Visitors can pay their respects to fallen soldiers at the National Mall. The mall features the National World War II Memorial, Vietnam Veterans Memorial, and Korean War Veterans Memorial, among others.

AAA projects over 45 million travelers over the long weekend, with most traveling by car. Nearly 1.5 million more people are projected to travel for Memorial Day than last year.

The National Weather Service expects it to be partly cloudy with a high of 76 degrees Fahrenheit on the holiday.
