Gas prices: Continue to fall after the July 4th holiday

Gas prices continued to decrease this week, even after the July 4th holiday. On Tuesday, the national average cost for regular gas dropped to $3.149 per gallon, according to AAA.

Tuesday’s fuel costs were slightly less expensive than a week ago when the average price for regular gas was $3.171 per gallon. Prices are also lower than on the last day of June when regular gas in the country was $3.185 per gallon. Fuel costs were substantially lower than a year ago when the national average price for regular gas was a whopping $3.519 per gallon.

Moreover, at $3.149 per gallon, the national average cost for a gallon of regular gas is at its lowest July average price point since 2020, when it was $2.272 per gallon, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration. A year later, in July 2021, the cost of regular gas averaged $3.23 per gallon. Both prices are markedly lower compared to July 2022, when the average price for a gallon of regular gas was $4.668, the second-highest monthly average in the nation’s history.

Gas prices have remained relatively steady over the last few weeks after the brief heightened geopolitical tension in the Middle East between Israel and Iran. After a slight increase in the middle of June, fuel costs have remained within a range of $3.14 to $3.19.

Many states nationwide experienced a drop in statewide average gas prices to less than $3 per gallon. This price point has fluctuated slightly within the last two weeks. On June 27, the last Friday in June, 17 states had average prices under $3. By Monday, June 30, that total rose to 21 states, according to AAA. Today, it dropped to 20 states.

In the United States, where one lives is mainly the determining factor in how much one pays for gas. Different regions of the country have different gas prices, sometimes substantially. The area with the most expensive gas prices is on the West Coast. Conversely, the states with the cheapest gas prices are located along the Gulf Coast.
