Women’s sports activist Riley Gaines announced her pregnancy this weekend in a joking reference to her spat with Olympic gymnast Simone Biles.
The two athletes have gone back and forth online over their differing opinions on transgender athletes in women’s sports. Gaines has been outspoken on the issue ever since she tied for fifth for the 200-meter 2022 NCAA championships with transgender swimmer Lia Thomas. Biles recently spoke out directly against Gaines in a series of X posts that she has since apologized for. In one post, Biles told Gaines that “no one in sports is safe with you around.” Biles also told Gaines to “bully someone your own size, which would ironically be a male.”
“I think the funniest thing about this to me about her saying, ‘Bully someone your own size, which would ironically be a man.’ How many men do you know that have this?” Gaines asked the crowd at a Turning Point USA event Saturday while she held up photos of an ultrasound and revealed her pregnancy bump.

“Surprise! Baby GIRL coming in September. God is so good all the time,” Gaines also posted on X early Sunday. “There’s something so special and providential about having a little girl. She’s everything I’ve been fighting for & the little girl we’ve prayed over for years praise God!”
In addition to her stance on women’s sports, Gaines has gone public as an anti-abortion advocate. She explained that since becoming pregnant, she became “radically pro-life.”
“I feel this baby, this young girl kicking around in my stomach when I’m lying down to sleep at night. I see the baby’s tiny little hands, her tiny little feet on the ultrasounds. I listen to her heartbeat,” Gaines said.

Biles hasn’t posted to X since her apology last week. The gymnast explained the heated moment was born out of her belief that “competitive equity and inclusivity are both essential in sport.”

”The current system doesn’t adequately balance these important principles, which often leads to frustration and heated exchanges, and it didn’t help for me to get personal with Riley, which I apologize for,” Biles wrote.
Gaines accepted the apology online, despite the backlash Biles’s post received from others.
