Emmy Griffin: Katie Porter Is a Nasty Piece of Work

The Democrats used to be better at subtlety. They may have thought they were better than the rest of us, but they weren’t so publicly and universally pompous. After losing significant political power last November, however, the Democrats are losing all over the place. They no longer have a stranglehold on the media narrative, they no longer have a stranglehold on the culture, and they no longer have any hold on the raging lunatics on their own side.

A perfect example of this is the tale of Katie Porter. Porter, a U.S. congresswoman from 2019-2025, is now the leading candidate in the gubernatorial race in California. She is hoping to replace Gavin Newsom, who in turn is hoping to replace President Donald Trump in 2028. Porter is a successful politician but also a very nasty piece of work. She is an accused abuser not only to her ex-husband and kids but to her staffers as well.

This nastiness was on full display when Porter sat down with CBS News journalist Julie Watts. CBS was interviewing all the candidates running for California governor and had a list of prepared questions for each, with routine follow-up questions for clarification — you know, like any half-decent journalist would do.

Watts asked Porter, “What do you say to the 40% of California voters, who you’ll need in order to win, who voted for Trump?”

Porter responded, “How would I need them in order to win, ma’am?” Watts was clearly stunned by that response and asked for clarity. That’s when Porter got ugly, telling Watts she was being too argumentative and needed to stick to the pre-agreed-upon list of questions and talking points. Porter got so flustered and agitated that she tried to walk out of the interview. Watts ultimately talked her down.

In the meantime, Watts went on to explain that she had conducted this interview with all the other candidates, to which Porter replied, “What part of ‘I’m me…’” She then paused because that line was obviously entitled and adjusted her answer to, “I’m running for governor because I’m a leader. I’m going to make…” Here, Watts again asked, “So you’re not going to answer questions from reporters?” Porter then slapped her legs in irritation.

Watts changed tactics and said she was going to continue the interview, asking the questions on the sheet but also maybe follow-up questions — because, you know, it’s her job, and Porter was free to answer or not answer them. Porter responded by saying the next manipulative thing: “I don’t want to have an unhappy experience with you, and I don’t want this all on camera.”

This right here exposes the implicit disregard that Democrats have for anyone who dares to have differing opinions. Porter doesn’t need them, doesn’t want them, and frankly couldn’t care less about trying to persuade them to vote for her. She was also quite irritated that she was subjected to being asked legitimate questions by a mere reporter who is supposed to be a licensed Praetorian Guard comrade, don’t you know.

Democrats have been saying the quiet part out loud for years now, but it’s been especially overt these last few weeks. Hillary Clinton told MSNBC that conservative white straight men who are of the Christian faith are the reason our country is veering off course. It was her latest allusion to the “basket of deplorables” rhetoric with which she has graced us before. Hillary sees her political opponents as the enemy.

More concerning are the recently released 2022 text messages from Jay Jones, the Democrat attorney general hopeful in Virginia. Jones apparently wanted to murder his opponents, called their children fascists, and wanted them to die in their mothers’ arms. He has also advocated for more police officer deaths, which is ironic since he’s running for the top law enforcement office. He has lost no Democrat endorsements over these heinous texts.

The Democrats do not want to change hearts and minds. They’re done with that. They simply want to overpower the opposition where they can and justify violence where they cannot.

Charlie Kirk once wisely said, “When people stop talking, really bad stuff starts. When marriages stop talking, divorce happens. When civilizations stop talking, civil war ensues. When you stop having a human connection with someone you disagree with, it becomes a lot easier to want to commit violence against that group. What we as a culture have to get back to is being able to have reasonable disagreement — where violence is not an option.”

Mainstream Democrats are beyond attempting to talk to or humanize conservatives. It seems like they want a war, or at least to intimidate enough of us through violence that we are cowed back into silence. For many of us, though, the reticence to speak our mind died with Charlie Kirk. While I pray for peace, I fear we’re going to have to muddle our way through more violence and chaos until goodness, truth, and beauty can be restored and our nation healed.

That’s the cost of freedom. It’s not free.
