Groucho Marx once quipped that he’d refuse to join any club that would have him as a member.
Similarly, we suspect, decent and law-abiding Marylanders must now be reconsidering their citizenship in the Old Line State, given that their favorite son, the Democrats’ much-maligned Maryland Man, has been charged with human trafficking.
On Friday, we got word that Kilmar Abrego Garcia, the alleged wife-beating, gang-banging, human-trafficking, illegal alien teddy bear from El Salvador — the guy who in March had been deported to a high-security prison in his home country — would now return to the U.S. to face federal charges stemming from a 2022 traffic stop in Tennessee — a traffic stop whose bodycam video looks no less incriminating today than it did when it was uncovered six weeks ago.

As the Tennessee Highway Patrol cop observes, “He’s hauling these people for money.” However, when they contacted Joe Biden’s FBI, the bureau advised against detaining Abrego Garcia. And Biden’s Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers didn’t bother to show up. Ten illegal aliens in a car with no luggage? Nothing to see here, folks. Move along.
What a difference a president makes. For months, the Democrats have been calling for Abrego Garcia’s return. And now they have their wish. The Trump administration’s two-count indictment includes charges of conspiracy to unlawfully transport illegal aliens for financial gain and unlawful transportation of illegal aliens. As the Article III Project’s Mike Davis puts it, “The ‘Maryland father’ is now a Tennessee prisoner.”
It was cause for celebration among the Trump-hating Democrats, including Maryland Senator Chris Van Hollen, who’d famously flown down to El Salvador at taxpayer expense to sip margaritas with Abrego Garcia while petitioning for his return to the country he’d unlawfully entered.
“For months,” said Van Hollen in a statement, “the Trump administration flouted the Supreme Court and our Constitution. Today, they appear to have finally relented to our demands for compliance with court orders and with the due process rights afforded to everyone in the United States.”
Or was it cause for celebration? As our Nate Jackson noted nearly two months ago, this guy is no Maryland Man. He’s an illegal-alien gangster. If you ask me, this indictment was yet another spectacular bit of political jiu jitsu from the Trump administration, which continues to force the Democrats into woefully untenable policy positions. Said Attorney General Pam Bondi on Friday:
Abrego Garcia has landed in the United States to face justice. This is what American justice looks like. … On May 21st, a grand jury in the Middle District of Tennessee returned a sealed indictment, charging Abrego Garcia with alien smuggling and conspiracy to commit alien smuggling. Our government presented El Salvador with an arrest warrant, and they agreed to return him to our country. We’re grateful to President Bukele for agreeing to return him to our country to face these very serious charges.
Think about it: The Democrats will fight tooth and nail for the “DUE PROCESS!!” rights of a wife-beating illegal alien human trafficker, but they’ll sit on their hands while a patriotic 72-year-old great-grandmother is being railroaded for peacefully walking around the Capitol building and praying for our nation.
Asked about the seriousness of the charges against Abrego Garcia, ICE Director Tom Homan told Fox News this morning, “They’re real serious … we’re gonna criminally prosecute him, and we’re gonna put him in prison. And when he gets done with his prison sentence, he’s gonna be deported right back to his homeland.”
That’s some “win” for the Democrats.
