Douglas Andrews: Assassin Nation: The MSM’s Cover-Up

The Left’s penchant for political violence is no secret is well documented. And yet the mainstream media can’t seem to report on it.

We can start with the general and the historical — there’s the Democrat-founded Klan, of course, and the anarchists and the commies and the assorted presidential assassins, and the ‘60s radicals like the Weathermen and the Black Panthers. More recently, we have the Trump 45 inauguration rioters, and the black bloc hordes of antifa, and the “mostly peaceful” Summer of Rage rioters. As for victims, we have the countless anonymous Trump supporters who’ve been assaulted for the offense of wearing a red cap or a Trump shirt, and the anonymous Tesla owners who became enemies of the Left when Elon Musk decided to support Donald Trump.

Then we can move to the particular — to the rhetorical hoodlums like Robert De Niro and Johnny Depp and James Comey and Barack Obama and Joe Biden. And to victims such as Congressman Steve Scalise, staffer Zack Barth, lobbyist Matt Mika, and officer Crystal Griner; Senator Rand Paul; Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh; President Donald Trump; President Donald Trump again; Governor Josh Shapiro; healthcare CEO Brian Thompson; Israeli embassy staffers Yaron Lischinsky and Sarah Milgrim; grandmother Karen Diamond; and now Charlie Kirk.

What about January 6, or the shooting of those Minnesota state legislators? they’ll screech. In fact, the overwhelming majority of J6ers were tourists, and the most grievous victim of violence that day was a Trump supporter, Ashli Babbitt. As for those strange Minnesota murders, the truth seems a lot more complicated.

But let’s get back to the mainstream media’s willful negligence. Charlie Kirk himself warned the nation earlier this year: “Assassination culture is spreading on the left. Forty-eight percent of liberals say it would be at least somewhat justified to murder Elon Musk. Fifty-five percent said the same about Donald Trump.”

Those are some sick and disturbing numbers, aren’t they? The mainstream media’s response to this disturbing development? Crickets. Tumbleweeds.

And there’s a strong element of denial on the Democrat side. Consider the equally stunning findings of a YouGov poll taken four days after Kirk’s assassination, which found that 41% of Democrats believe the assassin is a Republican.

How on earth can so many sentient beings — voters! — believe that a high-profile Christian conservative was assassinated by a Republican? Remember: Within 48 hours, we knew about the hate-filled leftist inscriptions on the assassin’s bullet casings — one of which read, “Hey fascist! Catch!”

And yet there was the legacy media, staring at its shoes. Or worse, actively obstructing the search for the truth.

Consider the “reporting” of CBS Evening News anchor John Dickerson: “Five days after Charlie Kirk’s murder,” he said, “the shooter’s motive remains elusive — no writings left behind, vague, secondhand testimony.”

Elusive? Really?

No, not really. Otherwise, CBS News wouldn’t have yanked down and Memory Holed the video of Dickerson’s remarks.

Then, of course, there was the long-overdue defenestration of ABC’s favorite Trump-deranged black-facer, Jimmy Kimmel, who was yanked off the air not because his network was censoring him, but because he sucked. Because he lost 72% of his key viewership demographic. Because Fox News’s Greg Gutfeld was just about tripling Kimmel’s audience every night. Because he cost his ABC and Disney employers millions of dollars. As Fox News’s Joe Concha said last night, “This isn’t about free speech. It’s about the free market.”

As Kimmel lied on his final night, “We hit some new lows over the weekend with the MAGA gang desperately trying to characterize this kid who murdered Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them and doing everything they can to score political points from it.”

This isn’t bad journalism — like when MSNBC’s vile Matthew Dowd suggested that Charlie Kirk might’ve had his throat shot out by “a supporter,” and that he had it coming to him anyway — because Kimmel isn’t a journalist. But it is lying. And just how many among his dwindling viewership actually believed him?

As for Kimmel’s firing, CNN’s Brian Stelter embodied the leftist outrage: “This is so serious … America is a less free place if late-night comedians cannot do and say what they want. … But this really does have a chilling effect across the American media.”

So Stelter is worried about a chilling effect — not because a husband and father was assassinated for speaking hard truths, but because a hate-filled hack finally got fired for losing millions and alienating his audience. That’s a fitting obscenity from Stelter, a leftist who can’t seem to grasp the very real chilling effect of a political assassination.

Clearly, the Leftmedia has downplayed or ignored the obvious left-wing radicalization of the assassin — from Dowd to Dickerson to Kimmel, with plenty of examples in between. And they’ve taken up the cause of Kimmel to deflect our attention from Charlie Kirk.

It won’t work. But this willful neglect and this dumbing-down of the citizenry does matter. Why? Because, as Founder John Adams warned us long ago, “Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious People. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other.”
