DHS Shouldn’t Have to Secure a Memorial Service

After Charlie Kirk’s assassination, one of the subjects being discussed by people in the conservative movement is how much security events will have going forward. This isn’t just a technical detail, it bears heavily on the ability of conservatives, especially those on campus and with smaller organizations, to be able to function.

President Trump’s attempted assassination and the killing of Charlie Kirk has significantly raised the cost of conservative speech. The impressive memorial service had to occupy an entire stadium and required top level attention from the Department of Homeland Security. Should DHS have to secure a memorial service?

Terrorism destroys normal life. During the worst era in the ‘intifada’, Israelis were afraid to ride buses. Kids had cell phones given to them and after every attack, parents would check that they were okay. After 9/11 and after Richard Reid, the ‘shoe bomber’, we got used to taking off our shoes to be able to travel.

We don’t want conservative speech, especially on campuses and the kinds of outdoor events Charlie used to do, to be a casualty of leftist terrorism.

And much in that regard will depend on what we do going forward.
