Democrats have a problem in Texas. Beyond the obvious, their latest bet on turning Texas blue depends on having viable candidates. And in Texas, their Senate primary frontrunner is Rep. Jasmine Crockett who really appeals to the TDS part of the base and to black voters, but who Dems believe has no chance of winning.
(Not that any of their past candidates had much of a shot at doing anything beyond burning cash. Including Beto.)
But their new Beto is James Talarico, whom Dems think could win, but they have to get Crockett out.
Rather than honestly make the argument to their base that Talarico is more electable than Crockett because they believe, correctly, it would be a dead end (“boo, we don’t trust the national party, we don’t care about electability, we want someone who shrieks about Trump until spittle covers the lens of their webcam”) , they’ve taken to trying to boost Talarico in really dishonest ways.
Stephen Colbert, who crossed the line from party line comedian to party line operative, put on a show of claiming that the FCC (and probably Trump) wouldn’t let him have Talarico on. The same media that loves government regulations amplified the lies, complaining that the government regulates TV too much.
Uh-huh.
Also that Crockett is a secret MAGA plant.
Republicans are boosting Jasmine Crockett ahead of critical Senate primary – Washington Post
What they really can’t say is that Crockett is a disaster and with a contentious Republican Senate primary, the seat might actually be winnable by Democrats. But less likely by a Dem who can’t appeal to anyone except angry liberal middle aged women. I’m skeptical that this is true, but divided GOP parties in Ohio and Pennsylvania and Arizona contributed heavily to Democrat wins. A divided GOP in Texas might be vulnerable.
Rep. Crockett’s argument is that she’s a populist and can win over independents. But the thing is that Dem populists tend to be popular, charismatic, and at least put on an image of being working class. Crockett is just another CBCer who is going to do little outside Houston and Dallas. But Dems can’t say that, what they can do is lie about Crockett and try to make their boy look like the victim of some MAGA conspiracy because they’re stuck with a party that hates Trump, but has little coherent political orientation or strategy outside the Left.
