There is a psychological term for the Democrats’ and their fellow leftists’ raging hostility towards federal agents who enforce the nation’s immigration laws. It is called ICE Derangement Syndrome, a close cousin of Trump Derangement Syndrome. Sufferers of ICE Derangement Syndrome regard apprehending, detaining, and removing immigrants who are in the U.S. illegally as akin to a crime against humanity. It leads Democrat politicians afflicted with this disease to join the hysterical mobs who label ICE agents as terrorists, fascists, the Gestapo, and the like.
The American people are paying the price.
For example, Democrat Washington state Representative Pramila Jayapal, a leftwing progressive, went as far as to say that illegal immigrants should receive “reparation” for the “trauma” she claims they have suffered. What about reparations for the innocent victims of crimes committed by illegal immigrants, such as the Washington state woman whom two illegal immigrants from Venezuela allegedly kidnapped, tortured, and attempted to kill? People like Rep. Jayapal with ICE Derangement Syndrome could not care less about them.
For more than a month, Democrats in the Senate banded together to hold the funding of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) hostage to their demands that would prevent ICE agents from doing their job. TSA employees, who are part of DHS, have gone without pay. Hundreds of them quit or called in sick, leading to chaos at the airports as airline passengers had to stand in incredibly long lines for hours waiting to clear security. When President Trump decided to deploy ICE agents at certain airports to help alleviate the dire situation, Democrats protested.
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) disgraced himself during an interview when he declared, “The last thing that the American people need are for untrained ICE agents to be deployed at airports all across the country, potentially to brutalize or in some instances kill them.”
Over in the Senate, Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) said, “ICE agents at airports will only aggravate delays & lines — disrupting checks, interrogating travelers, dragging parents from children, detaining citizens, brutalizing families, shooting & even killing.”
President Trump came up with a plan to help clean up the mess at major airports that the Democrats’ obstructionism brought about. The Democrats in both chambers of Congress responded with inflammatory rhetoric and fearmongering.
Philadelphia is one of the airport locations where ICE agents have been deployed. Philadelphia’s George Soros-backed Democrat District Attorney Larry Krasner had an ICE Derangement Syndrome meltdown.
“This is how it works,” he said. “You commit crimes within the jurisdiction that is the city and county of Philadelphia, I prosecute you. That is how it works. No, I don’t take a phone call from the president saying, ‘Let them go.’ No, the president cannot pardon you. And yes, I will put you in handcuffs and I will put you in a courtroom and, if necessary, I will put you in a jail cell if you decide to make the terrazzo floor of this airport anything like what you did in the streets of Minneapolis, which involved the criminal homicide of unarmed, innocent people. We are not having that.”
White House Press Secretary Karoline Levitt called DA Krasner’s threat a “disgraceful comment.” That is an understatement. “He’s talking to the ICE agents who are handing out water bottles and are helping people move through lines at airports,” Ms. Levitt added.
The Trump White House’s Rapid Response 47 team posted: “@ICEgov is there to help because Democrats have forced @TSA officers to work without paychecks. If you don’t like it, Larry, tell your fellow Democrats to fund @DHSgov.”
ICE agents have also been deployed at Chicago’s O’Hare Airport. Predictably, Illinois’ Democrat Governor JB Pritzker condemned their deployment. He claimed, with no evidence to back up his assertion, that the presence of ICE agents at airports was “causing chaos and instilling fear.”
On the contrary, ICE agents have helped reduce congestion and the resulting chaos at the airports to which they have been assigned. An ICE agent even saved the life of a one-year-old boy who stopped breathing while being held by his father as they waited in a long line at New York City’s JFK Airport.
“The panic of the child’s family and nearby passengers were heard by an ICE agent stationed at a checkpoint. This heroic officer immediately sprang into action—rushing toward the cries, taking the child, and performing a Heimlich maneuver that restored the infant’s breathing after nearly two minutes,” DHS said.
Governor Pritzker and Chicago’s Democrat Mayor Brandon Johnson both have a bad case of ICE Derangement Syndrome. Governor Pritzker accused ICE agents last year of “grabbing people off the street” and “disappearing them.” Mayor Johnson accused ICE agents of “terrorizing our communities.”
Both Governor Pritzker and Mayor Johnson displayed their ICE Derangement Syndrome again recently in their responses to the coldblooded murder of college student Sheridan Gorman, whom an illegal immigrant from Venezuela, Jose Medina-Medina, allegedly shot to death in the head.
“On May 9, 2023,” according to DHS, “Medina-Medina was apprehended by the U.S. Border Patrol and released into the country under the Biden administration. He was then released again on June 19, 2023, following an arrest for shoplifting in Chicago, Illinois.”
Medina-Medina never should have been allowed into the United States and released in the first place. And once he was detained by Chicago authorities after being charged with committing a crime, Medina-Medina should have been handed over to ICE for removal from the country rather than being released onto the streets of Chicago. Sheridan Gorman might still be alive today if that had happened. But Chicago is a sanctuary city where concern for the welfare of illegal immigrants comes before the welfare of law-abiding American citizens.
After expressing pro forma condolences to Sheridan Gorman’s family, Governor Pritzker went after the Trump administration for “politicizing heinous tragedies” and blamed “real failures” in the national immigration system.
Mayor Johnson took almost a week before acknowledging Ms. Gorman’s brutal murder and offering condolences to her family. But instead of recognizing that illegal immigrants coddled by Chicago’s sanctuary city policies have committed horrific crimes in his city, he insulted the memory of Sheridan Gorman and of all victims of crimes committed by illegal immigrants when he unveiled the Chicago snowplow named “Abolish ICE.”
“This name derives from our city’s legacy of standing up for justice, dignity, and the rights of all people, no matter where they come from,” Johnson said. “I want to take this moment to reiterate that Chicago does not want ICE on our streets, in our airports, nor in our city. Chicago believes in abolishing ICE.”
The Left’s malady of ICE Derangement Syndrome is incurable. The one remedy for dealing with elected officials afflicted with this mental disorder is to remove them from office.
