The national average price for a gallon of regular gas dropped again on Christmas Day to $2.847, according to AAA.
It marks the fifth straight week of falling prices at the pumps and is the lowest national average price for a gallon of regular gasoline on a Christmas Day since 2020, when it was $2.224 per gallon during the week of Dec. 21, 2020. In Dec. 2021, the average price for a gallon of gas was $3.307 and every subsequent Christmas was over $3 per gallon.
The current price of gasoline is also the lowest fuel cost in the United States since March 2021, when the average cost of gas was $2.81 per gallon, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration. Currently, 40 states in the U.S. have gas price averages under $3 per gallon, the most states with such a price in years. Of the 11 remaining areas with gas prices over $3 per gallon, which includes Washington, D.C., eight are states with Democratic governors.
Fuel costs have gradually decreased since the end of October and early November. On Oct. 2, the national average price for a gallon of gas was $3.16. By the end of the month, gas prices had dropped to $3.04 per gallon. After fluctuations and flirtations with fuel prices under the $3 per gallon threshold throughout November, the national average gas prices fell under $3 for the first time in four years on Dec. 2. They’ve continued falling ever since. A week ago, the national average for a gallon of regular gas was $2.896, and on Christmas Eve, prices had dropped to $2.854 per gallon.
As mentioned above, gas prices vary throughout the U.S., depending on the region of the country. The West Coast has the most expensive gas prices in the country, while states in the Gulf of America and the Midwest typically have the lowest. Notably, there are currently 11 states with average gas prices under $2.50 per gallon.
