Some Dems have gotten off the pro-crime train, but California Dems are still all-in on freeing criminals and protecting the worst possible monsters.
The Senate Appropriations Committee also killed two Republican tough-on-crime proposals, showing the limits of Democrats’ recent shift slightly rightward on crime. Until Friday, it had been surprisingly smooth sailing this year for Senate Minority Leader Brian Jones’ bill to block sex offenders from being released from prison through the state’s elderly parole program, and Sen. Kelly Seyarto’s bill to increase penalties for selling or giving fentanyl to minors.
While some elderly criminals cease to be dangerous, sex offenders are less likely to be in that category. Especially those who prey on children.
And what exactly is the argument for going easy on those giving fentanyl to minors?
The bill’s author, Sen. Seyarto, noted that fentanyl was involved in 80% of drug-induced deaths among 14- to 23-year-olds.
The nationwide rise is massive.
Researchers looked at over 3,000 incidents of nonfatal fentanyl exposure in children up to 19 years old that were reported to poison centers, and found a 1,194.2% increase between 2015 and 2023, according to the study published in the American Journal of Drug and Alcohol Abuse.
But there are no criminals that these people won’t protect.
