Bass cuts down curfew hours after protests ease

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass announced on Monday that she would be softening the curfew imposed on downtown Los Angeles, just a square mile of the city, from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m., which will stay in effect until 6 a.m.

Bass’s decision to ease the curfew came after no arrests were reported on Sunday evening.

“The curfew, coupled with ongoing crime prevention efforts, have been largely successful in protecting stores, restaurants, businesses and residential communities from bad actors who do not care about the immigrant community,” Bass said in a statement released on Monday. “Today, I am narrowing the curfew as we continue to quickly adjust to changing posturing out of Washington. I want the Downtown Los Angeles community of residents, business owners and events venues to know that my priority will continue to be ensuring safety, stability and support in the Downtown neighborhoods.”

A curfew was first implemented on June 6 by Bass in response to a slew of violent acts carried out by rioters, including setting vehicles on fire, attacking officers with bricks, and looting businesses. A total of 23 businesses were targeted by rioters.

Hundreds of people have been arrested since the riots first broke out in downtown Los Angeles nearly a week and a half ago.

“This adjusted curfew reflects the progress we’ve made in reducing crime and vandalism within the curfew zone,” LAPD Chief of Police Jim McDonnell told CBS News. “That said, we’re not letting our guard down. The LAPD will maintain a strong presence in the Downtown area to ensure the safety of residents, businesses, and demonstrators alike.”

Bass did not indicate when the curfew would end.

In response to the riots, President Donald Trump deployed 4,000 National Guard troops and 700 Marines, much to the dismay of Bass and Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA).
