Active shooter reported at University of South Carolina

Police are responding to a reported active shooter at the University of South Carolina‘s main campus in Columbia.

The school sent out an emergency alert just after 6:30 p.m. that said an active shooter was reported at the Thomas Cooper Library, the main library on campus.

“Avoid the area. Evacuate the area or seek safe shelter and barricade yourself in a safe area as necessary until further notice. Defend yourself if you encounter the suspect. Obey public safety officials’ commands. Public safety officials are on the scene,” the alert said.

A subsequent alert sent out 10 minutes later identified the shooter as a “6ft white male with black pants” who is still in the area.
