Emmy Griffin: Michelle Obama Still Has a Chip on Her Shoulder

America is never going to be a good enough place for Michelle Obama, who is using her long track record of bitterness and racial animosity to bring in an influx of cash for her new book. For a former first lady who was proud of her country for the first time in her life when her husband was elected, this pride was apparently short-lived, with myriad qualifiers attached. After all, the Obamas have not occupied the White House in almost a decade, yet Michelle is still angry.

The sourpuss’s new book, The Look, is about having used fashion to convey messages during her time in the White House. However, a big part of the book also just complains about how the Obama family was put under a microscope.

“Good Morning America” co-anchor Robin Roberts recently asked Michelle, “You said, ‘We were all too aware that as the first black couple, we couldn’t afford any missteps.’ And you also say, ‘As a black woman, I was under a particularly white hot glare.’ Did you feel that?”

This question seems particularly mind-numbing because, if Michelle wrote it, she obviously either felt it was true or at least wants to pretend it was. Frankly, though, Roberts was really just attempting to set up Michelle’s ensuing grievance complaint. The former first lady responded, “For sure. You can’t afford to get anything wrong, because you didn’t — at least until the country came to know us — we didn’t get the grace that I think some other families have gotten.”

This is ridiculous.

First, Michelle has a very distorted view of what heavy criticism looks like. In fact, her treatment has been with kid gloves compared to Melania Trump’s. The current first lady has endured far worse treatment than Michelle ever did. Melania, a former model, has been scorned by former friends, the media, and magazines. Her home was violated by FBI snoopers. Her husband was shot at and almost killed. Yet she carries herself with quiet dignity and seems to float above it all.

Second, the first family is always under a microscope. They are the most powerful people in the world. Yes, being black occupants of the White House was novel, but that didn’t necessarily mean the intensity would be less.

Third, Michelle is demonstrating once again that she has lived her whole life in an Afrocentrist bubble. She filters everything through the lens of race. Every slight is racism, every criticism is racism, every complaint is racism. This brain rot taints everything for her.

Michelle and Barack Obama have received the royal treatment ever since they entered the national stage. The only real criticism of Michelle was her failed attempt at putting healthy lunches in schools, which backfired horribly. Besides that, she was on the cover of numerous magazines, she became a best-selling author, and she even has her own podcast. She is admired and lionized by the Left, and yet nothing this country can do for her will ever be enough.

Now, Michelle is using the specter of racism to talk about the “soft power” of fashion choices. This is not a new idea. In fact, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis is very famous for her use of fashion as the first lady.

Radio host Buck Sexton quipped, “Starting to feel like maybe Michelle Obama is a bitter malcontent addicted to complaining about her incredibly privileged life.” Her complaining and playing the race card are par for the course, which is a real shame. She will never be happy being the “victim” all the time, and those who follow her will have similarly miserable lives.

The question is, has the magic of the Obamas faded the further we get from 2016?
