Douglas Andrews: Another Self-Defeating Leftist Boycott

One of the best-selling business books of all time is Dale Carnegie’s How to Win Friends and Influence People. Published in 1936, the book has sold more than 30 million copies worldwide — and not a single volume, it seems, to a leftist.

Indeed, the Left’s version of Carnegie’s book is probably Saul Alinsky’s Rules for Radicals, and it’ll remain so until an honest and introspective Democrat — work with me here — publishes a confessional called How to Lose Friends and Alienate People.

In the meantime, though, the Trump-deranged leftist tail continues to wag the Democrat dog. Witness the latest example of this, which comes from a group calling itself “Blackout the System” and calling for a weeklong nationwide economic boycott at the height of the holiday shopping season. “WE’RE NOT ASKING,” blares the group’s homepage, “WE’RE SHUTTING IT DOWN.”

To these dolts we say: Knock yourselves out. It’s as if they didn’t learn anything from the collective thud of the recent “No Kings” protests. Or maybe they simply learned the wrong thing — that the way to win people over to your side is not by persuading them with the power of your ideas but by being as comically obnoxious as humanly possible. As they put it:

BLACKOUT THE SYSTEM is a gobal [sic] movement born out of [illiteracy] frustration, injustice, and the undeniable truth that the people hold the power — not corrupt governments, not billionaires, not broken systems. We are shutting down the U.S. economy — strategically and peacefully — by removing our labor, our spending, our financial support, forcing the system to listen. This movement launched to reclaim power, restore justice, and unite people across all races, cultures, and classes.

Uh-huh. In their defense, though, at least the Blackout folks have enlisted the services of a compelling and charismatic spokesperson.

While all this is happening, Day 27 of the Schumer Shutdown is upon us, and the colossus that is Donald Trump is amid a five-day trip to Asia, keeping the peace, charming the locals, and racking up rare-earth and mineral deals with Thailand, Malaysia, and Australia, thereby to build leverage with which to negotiate with our nation’s foremost geopolitical foe — the lying, thieving, cheating Communist Chinese, who are now learning that they can no longer steal our intellectual property, manipulate their currency, dump their steel, and unleash global pandemics with impunity.

Closer to home, Trump has dropped the gloves against the narcoterrorists in order to save American lives. The administration tells us that every drug-laden boat we blow up in the Caribbean amounts to 25,000 American lives saved. That might be an exaggeration, but the point stands, and the narcoterrorists are no doubt noticing. Trump’s influence is clearly being felt in that neck of the woods, with Trump ally Javier Milei having won a resounding victory in Argentina’s midterm elections over the weekend.

So while Trump is swinging for the fences, the leftists are playing small ball, and they’re descending into dangerous political territory. “Donald Trump is living inside their heads,” writes the New York Post’s Miranda Devine. “This time around, it’s morphed into something far more lethal. Like a wounded animal that’s been cornered, electorally challenged Democrats are desperate and dangerous. They make TDS look like a quaint affectation. In the spirit of “If you can’t beat him, join him,” they’re trying to imitate Trump, but they’re imitating a foul-mouthed cartoon villain version of a Hitlerian dictator that they have convinced themselves he is.“

Devine even coined a new term — Trump Projection Disorder — to describe a phenomenon we here in our humble shop have been talking about for years. Namely, that the Left has become everything that it incorrectly and hysterically accused Donald Trump of being.

Ya hate to see it. Just hate to see it.
