Put Out British Flags? In the U.K., You Can Lose Your Job

[Order Michael Finch’s new book, A Time to StandHERE. Prof. Jason Hill calls it “an aesthetic and political tour de force.”]

Another telling story, a sign of these terrible times, comes to us from Britain, where Shaun Remmer wanted to offer an outward and visible sign of attachment — his and others in the North Yorkshire town of Thirsk — to the nation, and as a symbol of what he hoped was its “unity.” So Remmer went about putting up the Union Jack hither and yon in Thirsk. Many people were pleased with his undertaking, but not all. Who do you think would object to the British flag being flown? Those who have no wish to have such a sign of loyalty to, and affection for, the country in which they live, and who resent those who have such affection and express such loyalty. You can figure out who those people must be. More on Shaun Remmer’s ordeal can be found here: “Father loses job after being ‘snitched on’ for raising Union Jacks in his hometown,” by Dan McDonald, GB News, October 16, 2025:

A supply teacher was fired from his job after he was “snitched on” for hoisting the flag in his North Yorkshire hometown.

Father-of-one Shaun Remmer from Thirsk lost his job as a teaching assistant at Welburn Hall School in York after raising the banners to symbolise the “unity” of Britain.

The former teaching assistant said he estimates he’d helped put up around 150 flags across the small town.

He added that his “decorations” received a host of compliments from locals.

Mr Remmer said neighbours have stopped him in the street to shake his hand and thank him for putting up the flags.

But the 49-year-old said some took offence to his gesture and reported him to his place of work, leading to him losing his job….

He was reported for putting up the flag of his country around his hometown. Why should that offend anyone? And worse still, why was this 49-year-old man with a family, living a precarious existence as a teaching assistant, be fired? Those who let him go did so after complaints about the flags were made either by Britishers on the far-left, or more likely, by Muslim migrants hostile to any symbols suggesting support for the state of the Infidels, the “most vile of created beings.”

Shaun Remmer was celebrating the unity of Great Britain by putting up the Union Jack. In the past, he noted, he had put up the flags of the United Kingdom’s constituent parts — the flags of Scotland, Ireland, and Wales.

Mr Remmer has alleged that he was told by the school not to return to work after it caught wind of what he had been doing.

He said: “I got a phone call from my agency telling me that a trust I used to work at, but don’t any more, said they received a complaint about me putting flags up in Thirsk.

“The school had then spoke to the trustees and then rang my agency to tell them that they no longer want me to work at either of their schools. It was really odd….

Could the school not have first discussed the flags with Mr Remmer, and allowed him to take them down, rather than summarily firing him? Why was there such draconian punishment for a display of national pride?

The 49-year-old claimed the agency inferred that he was a racist and has since been turned away from working for a different one, who told him there were “safeguarding issues”

Here it is easy to read between the lines. Shaun Remmer was discussing on social media the Pakistani grooming gangs. Mentioning the ethnicity and, by implication, the religion of these malefactors who have destroyed the lives of tens of thousands of English girls, is strictly forbidden. It is “racist” to bring up such things, even though Islam is not a “race.” Shaun Remmer had to be punished for daring to talk about certain crimes in the country that are linked to Muslims, and especially about the Pakistani grooming gangs and their victims.

North Yorkshire Council wrote to the former supply teacher to instruct him to halt the flag-hoisting due to health and safety issues, adding that he will be charged for their removal if he persists.

There is no suggestion that Shaun Remmer refused to stop putting up the flag. Yet without waiting for a reply from him, the local school authorities fired him.

The council’s director of environment, Karl Battersby, said: “We are proud to support big national and regional occasions by flying a St George’s Cross or Union Flag.

“However, we are aware of some residents across North Yorkshire feeling uncomfortable with the numbers of flags as well as graffiti.

What subset of the population do you think felt “uncomfortable” with the sight of so many British flags? I know of only one: Muslims, whose sole loyalty must be to the umma, the community of believers, and not to any infidel nation they may happen to have settled in.

“This does not reflect the inclusive and celebratory tone in which displaying the flags should be intended. We have also seen numerous examples of people putting themselves at risk to display flags on highways, bridges and lampposts….

Why is the display of the British flags not “inclusive”? Is it because Shaun Remmer is known as someone alarmed at crime, and specifically at the crimes of the grooming gangs, which means the Muslim migrants behind those gangs? Therefore when he puts up a flag, the authorities believe, Remmer must be doing it in the wrong spirit: he’s flaunting Englishness aggressively, and making Muslims uneasy. But their unease with the British flag is what should make the British public uneasy.

It is the Muslims who should be assimilating into British society, who should have developed a sense of gratitude toward the country that has allowed them in, and pride in being part of the U.K. But neither gratitude nor pride is forthcoming, but only the hope that their increasing numbers will eventually turn the U.K. into a state where Islam will prevail, for as Muhammad said in a famous hadith, “Islam must dominate and not be dominated.”

One wonders why those people who put up Palestinian flags on public property all over the U.K. have never been prosecuted for the offense, or lost their jobs like Shaun Bremmer. And why ever should Shaun Bremmer not have been given the chance to take down his flags instead of being fired posthaste?

Wellburn Hall School’s headteacher Marianne Best said: “Mr Shaun Remmer worked at the school on a temporary basis as a supply teaching assistant via an education recruitment agency.”

So because he had been working “on a temporary basis” at a school, did that mean he should be fired because certain people — you know who I mean — were offended by the sight of so many Union Jacks?

There is something very wrong here, and it is not Shaun Remmer who is to blame.
