Foreign leaders honor Charlie Kirk as defender of freedom after assassination

Leaders from around the world mourned the death of conservative commentator Charlie Kirk after he was assassinated at a Utah university Wednesday.

A gunman, who is still on the loose, shot and killed Kirk while he was speaking to students at the university.

Argentine President Javier Milei called Kirk a “staunch defender” of the West and blamed his killing on left-wing violence.

“He was the victim of an atrocious murder in the midst of a wave of left-wing political violence across the entire region. The left is always, at all times and places, a violent phenomenon full of hatred. The entire world lost an incredible human being,” he said.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said it was “heartbreaking that a young family has been robbed of a father and a husband.”

“We must all be free to debate openly and freely without fear — there can be no justification for political violence,” he added.

British Conservative Party Leader Kemi Badenoch called Kirk’s killing a “blow to everything Western civilization stands for,” while former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said, “The murder of Charlie Kirk is a tragedy, and a sign of the utter desperation and cowardice of those who could not defeat him in argument.”

“The world has a shining new martyr to free speech,” Johnson concluded.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that Kirk was “murdered for speaking truth and defending freedom.”

“I spoke to him only two weeks ago and invited him to Israel. Sadly, that visit will not take place. We lost an incredible human being. His boundless pride in America and his valiant belief in free speech will leave a lasting impact. Rest in peace, Charlie Kirk,” he concluded.

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni called Kirk’s assassination an “atrocious murder” and a “deep wound for democracy and for those who believe in freedom.”

America’s neighbor to the north also reacted, with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney saying he was “appalled by the murder of Charlie Kirk.”

“There is no justification for political violence and every act of it threatens democracy. My thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends, and loved ones,” he added.
