The Walt Disney Company and Lucasfilm announced Thursday that they have settled with actress Gina Carano in a lawsuit she filed against the entertainment giants last year for alleged wrongful termination.
“We have reached an agreement with Gina Carano to resolve the issues in her pending lawsuit against the companies,” a Lucasfilm representative said in a statement. “Ms. Carano was always well respected by her directors, co-stars, and staff, and she worked hard to perfect her craft while treating her colleagues with kindness and respect.”
The company also left the door open to working with Carano on future projects, with the representative adding, “With this lawsuit concluded, we look forward to identifying opportunities to work together with Ms. Carano in the near future.”
As The Federalist’s Jordan Boyd previously reported, Carano was fired by Lucasfilm in February 2021 “at the behest of keyboard warriors who complained one of her reposts — which referenced Jews who were ‘beaten in the streets’ because ‘the government first made their own neighbors hate them’ — was ‘antisemitic’ and ‘racist.’” At the time, Carano was starring in Star Wars: The Mandalorian, and was reportedly set to have a leading role in a since-canceled spinoff series, Star Wars: Rangers of the New Republic.
In a statement regarding her termination from the company at the time, a Lucasfilm official claimed the former MMA star’s aforementioned posts “denigrat[ed] people based on their cultural and religious identities.” As noted by Boyd, however, “reporting suggested the company was ‘looking for a reason to fire her for two months’ before.”
Carano brought her lawsuit against the House of Mouse in February 2024 following an August 2023 tweet from X owner Elon Musk, who offered to “fund [the] legal bill” of anyone “unfairly treated by your employer due to posting or liking something on this platform.”
When announcing the lawsuit, Carano expressed she was “being hunted down from everything I posted to every post I liked because I was not in line with the acceptable narrative of the time,” adding, “My words were consistently twisted to demonize & dehumanize me as an alt right wing extremist.”
Despite Disney’s best efforts, the judge overseeing the case tossed the company’s motion to dismiss the suit in July 2024 and subsequently shot down its attempts to delay discovery in the case later that year.
The trial was slated to begin in September 2025, according to The Daily Wire.
Carano responded to Thursday’s announced settlement on X, saying she believes the agreement “is the best outcome for all parties involved” and expressed “hope this brings some healing to the force.”
“I want to extend my deepest most heartfelt gratitude to Elon Musk, @elonmusk a man I’ve never met, who did this Good Samaritan deed for me in funding my lawsuit,” Carano wrote. “I am humbled and grateful to God for His love and grace in this outcome. I’d like to thank you all for your unrelenting support throughout my life and career, you’ve been the heartbeat that has kept my story alive. I hope to make you proud.”
“I am excited to flip the page and move onto the next chapter. My desires remain in the arts, which is where I hope you will join me,” she added.
