Mark Alexander: About Those FBI Crime Stats

This week, there was good news from the FBI: “Crime down in every category in 2024.” And despite variations of that CBS headline ubiquitously echoed by Leftmedia news platforms, notably there was one category that was not down. That would be murders of and assaults on police officers.

According to the FBI Uniform Crime Reporting Program estimates for 2024 compared to 2023: Murder and non-negligent manslaughter decreased 14.9%, offenses in the revised rape category decreased 5.2%, aggravated assault decreased 3.0%, and robbery decreased 8.9%.

That is all good news, and it is mostly accurate, despite the fact that there are still law enforcement agencies that do not file reports. And the reporting by cities nationwide is not “uniform.”

At least Fox News correctly noted, “US crime dropped … with some notable caveats,” the first being a “concerning rise in law enforcement officer deaths” in 2024.

According to FBI data, there were 64 Law Enforcement Officers (LEOs) murdered. From 2021 to 2024, a total of 258 officers were murdered. Moreover, there were 85,730 assaults on officers, the highest officer assault rate in the past 10 years.

The good news is that since Donald Trump was elected, there has been a sharp decline in LEO murders and assaults. Bill Alexander, head of the National LEO Memorial Fund, said, “We as an organization never like to use the words ‘good news’ when we’re talking about or reporting on even a single police officer’s death, but I would call this a very welcome and encouraging trend line.” He attributed the drop to the election of Trump last fall, which marked a significant shift away from the anti-police attitudes fomented by the Biden/Harris regime.

Whether that trend will hold or not will depend on whether the Demos tone down their recent rhetoric against ICE officers and state and local LEOs assisting them.

The rhetoric of congressional Demos in DC and urban leaders primarily on the Left Coast is once again fueling violence against LEOs. Their targets this summer have been ICE agents. Typical of their rhetoric is this from LA’s communist mayor Karen Bass: “[ICE arrests] are a political agenda of invoking fear and terror. No plan other than fear, chaos, and politics.” And this from Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-WA): “ICE is acting like a terrorist force. People across the country of all legal statuses — including U.S. citizens — are being kidnapped and disappeared off the street by masked men. No oversight, no accountability. Completely lawless.” Not to be outdone, former VP candidate and current Minnesota Governor Tim Walz insists that ICE agents are “Trump’s modern-day Gestapo.”

So, what caused the drop in crime in 2024?

The mainstream media will not tell you. Even most conservative media outlets do not have staff knowledgeable enough to provide analysis rather than just repeat the data in press releases.

But we can tell you why.

Five years ago, in the summer ahead of the 2020 election, Joe Biden and his cadres of Demo governors and mayors controlling urban poverty plantations across the nation set off a “Summer of Rage” bomb as part of their election strategy to defeat Trump. Fomenting hate and division and a culture of violence is Chapter 1 of their political playbook, and they used the death of drug thug George Floyd to do just that.

The ensuing riots by their constituent Marxist Black Lives Matter radicals and their antifa movement fascists metastasized nationwide, which, when combined with the Democrats’ vilification of police and their defund-the-police campaign, unleashed a dramatic surge of violence nationwide over the following four years. The result was not only a police recruiting crisis but a surge in the number of law enforcement officers (LEOs) attacked and killed in the line of duty.

In 2022, Biden attempted to get more favorable crime numbers by altering how the FBI collects data. Despite that, the numbers continued to climb.

But in 2024, that surge of violent crime finally began to subside. And ahead of the election last year, Democrats decided not to foment pre-election race riots across the nation, knowing that might backfire this time around.

On the subject of the Demos’ hate-hustling agenda, something else missing from the FBI reports is clear data regarding race and violence. If you want a detailed account of that, read “Race and Violence: A Politically Inconvenient Truth.” Suffice it to say that black citizens are only 13 percent of the nation’s population but regarding crime, as former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg noted: “Ninety percent of all people killed in our city — and 90 percent of all those who commit the murders and other violent crimes — are black and Hispanic. It is shameful that so many elected officials and editorial writers have been largely silent on these facts.”

Again, no silence about that here, Bloomberg. If Demos actually believe “black lives matter,” if that were anything more than a pandering bumper-sticker slogan, they would not propagate the failed urban policies that proliferate black-on-black violence, while obfuscating the gross racial disparity of that violence.

As a former LEO, the attacks and murders of police are much more than a statistic to me. For that reason, The Patriot Post has published tributes to federal, state, and local LEOs killed in the line of duty on our End of Watch page.
