United Airlines grounds flights nationwide due to ‘technology issue’

A technological problem grounded all United Airlines flights on Wednesday evening, according to the airline.

United Airlines flights out of Denver, Chicago, Houston, Newark, and San Francisco were held at their departures, according to data from the Federal Aviation Administration. In a statement, United Airlines said it was prioritizing safety.

“Due to a technology issue, we are holding United mainline flights at their departure airports,” the airline wrote. “We expect additional flight delays this evening as we work through this issue. Safety is our top priority, and we’ll work with our customers to get them to their destinations.”

Any flight already airborne will continue to its destination.

United Airlines told ABC News in a statement that the outage was not due to a cyberattack. So far, 827 flights have been delayed and 23 have been canceled, with further delays possible.

Technical problems have plagued airlines in recent years. In January 2023, an FAA outage delayed 32,578 flights and canceled 409.
