Number of missing from Texas floods drops to just three

Only three people are still missing following the catastrophic flooding in central Texas over two weeks ago, a number that was revised down from 160.

Earlier this week, the number of people missing from the floods was determined to be at 160 as search-and-rescue efforts continued in the state. On Saturday night, that number dropped sharply to just three due to “extensive follow-up work among state and local agencies” verifying “many” people who are now safe from the flooding.

“Through extensive follow-up work among state and local agencies, many individuals who were initially reported as missing have been verified as safe and removed from the list. This has been an ongoing effort as investigators worked diligently to verify reports of missing persons and confirm their status,” Kerr County officials announced in a press release.

The release added, “This remarkable progress reflects countless hours of coordinated search and rescue operations, careful investigative work, and an unwavering commitment to bringing clarity and hope to families during an unimaginably difficult time.”

The death toll from the floods, which occurred over the July 4 holiday weekend after heavy rainfall caused the Guadalupe River in central Texas to rise rapidly, sits at 134. Over 100 of those deaths were in Kerr County and included 27 campers and counselors from Camp Mystic, an all-girls Christian summer camp.

According to CNN, of the three people still missing, one is missing in Travis County, while another is missing in Burnet County, both over 100 miles from where the floods originated.

“Recovery operations continue throughout the Guadalupe River watershed by local, state, national and international search teams who continue to work to reunite the missing with their families,” the Saturday press release said.
