On Thursday, Jeffries gave his “magic minute” speech to delay the passage of President Donald Trump’s “big, beautiful bill.” The speech began at 4:53 a.m. after an already lengthy day for the House, leaving many representatives sleep-deprived. Jeffries’s passion wasn’t enough to keep Kaptur awake, and she began dozing off.
Unfortunately for the House Democrats, she was positioned right behind Jeffries, within the C-SPAN camera shot.
She was asleep for slightly under five minutes before one of her staff members came to wake her up and take her away. She was replaced by a fully awake Rep. Sarah McBride (D-DE).
Kaptur’s opponents were quick to seize on the viral moment, including Republican Ohio state Rep. Josh Williams, who is running to unseat her in 2026.
JEFFRIES HOLDS HOUSE FLOOR IN ‘MAGIC MINUTE’ SPEECH TO SLAM ‘BIG, UGLY BILL’
“Marcy Kaptur has been sleeping on the job for longer than I’ve been alive. Enough is enough! Northwest Ohio deserves real representation in Congress, not a slumbering career politician who votes for record tax increases,” he said in a post on X.
Kaptur had spoken shortly before Jeffries took the podium, using her time to deride the bill, which she decried as the “Big Bonanza Bill for Billionaires.”
