Musk, who has since stepped back from his role as DOGE chief, implemented the “five things” on Feb. 22, ordering government employees to submit to the Office of Personnel Management and their managers a list of what they worked on during the week.
In lieu of a weekly activity report, Pentagon employees will be required to submit one idea by Wednesday each week to help eliminate waste, fraud, and abuse, according to an email sent by Undersecretary of Defense for Personnel and Readiness Jay Hurst, the Associated Press reported.
The “five things” email was sent to all government workers across all federal agencies.
At first, Pentagon officials told employees not to send a report, but on Feb. 28, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth signed a memorandum allowing employees to submit their weekly reports.

Hegseth has made DOGE’s initiatives a top priority, announcing last month plans to cut $5.1 billion in spending on contracts, with a majority of the money cut away from consulting contracts.
Meanwhile, Musk is nearing the end of his contract as a special government employee in his administration of DOGE.
