Douglas Andrews: Kamala Won’t Go Away

Here at The Patriot Post, we always — always — put our readers first. Which is why, for example, I sat through and listened to every tooth-pulling, blackboard-scratching word of Kamala Harris’s “comeback” speech yesterday. In short, I took one in the neck so you wouldn’t have to.

You’re welcome.

First, we should stipulate what’s obvious to everyone but those in the legacy media: Kamala Harris is old news, damaged goods. She was resoundingly exposed and beaten for the presidency by the Democrats’ archenemy, never to get another chance at it. That she still warrants as much attention as she does from the mainstream media is also evidence of how rudderless and leaderless today’s Democrat Party is.

Nonetheless, Harris finally emerged from her months-long post-election bender to deliver 16 minutes of scripted remarks at the 20th anniversary celebration of Emerge for America, whose mission is to recruit and train Democrat women to run for office.

In a way, it was entirely fitting. I mean, what better example is there of the fruits of this organization’s labor than Harris herself, who never had any business running for president but who kept defying the Peter Principle on her way from San Francisco DA to California attorney general to U.S. senator to vice president to the subject of Donald Trump’s $10 billion “deceptive manipulation” lawsuit against CBS — a suit that CBS’s parent company, Paramount, calls “baseless” but is nonetheless eager to settle?

It was perhaps also fitting that she spoke on the day after President Donald Trump marked his hundredth day in office. In doing so, she provided a contrast between talking and doing, between putting America last and putting America first.

She got a standing ovation, and, judging from the ear-to-ear smile on her face, you couldn’t tell she’d recently been trounced by more than two million votes and lost every single swing state on the way to a 312-226 Electoral College shellacking.

And in terms of delivery, Harris did just fine. But as Joe Biden proved on more than one occasion, one needn’t necessarily be sentient to read words off a teleprompter.

Harris lauded the beleaguered leftist rabble “who are speaking out to say, ‘It’s not okay to violate court orders. … Not okay to detain and disappear American citizens or anyone without due process.’”

This remark got an enthusiastic response from the audience, which tells us that these people simply don’t get Everyday America. It’s a foreign land to them, this place where common sense controls the high ground, and they can’t seem to get it through their thick skulls that when you’re arguing about due process for wife-beating illegal-alien gang members, you’re losing the argument.

Similarly, she criticized the Trump agenda as “a narrow, self-serving vision of America, where they punish truth-tellers, favor loyalists, cash in on their power, and leave everyone to fend for themselves.” Here, she’s committing the most predictable of Democrat tricks: She’s accusing her enemies of precisely that which she and her party are guilty of.

She also extolled the virtues of the Democrats’ depleted bench. “Leaders across the spectrum, including congressional leaders like Cory Booker, Chris Van Hollen, Chris Murphy, Jasmine Crockett, Maximo Frost, AOC, and Bernie Sanders,” she said, “have been speaking with moral clarity about this moment.” (Interestingly, Harris never once mentioned her own running mate, valor-stealing Tim Walz — the code-talking structural permission-giver who brought home to the Democrat Party that elusive pheasant-hunting, truck-fixing, football-watching white male vote. Dude can run a mean pick-6, but he can’t seem to merit a mention.)

Here, though, we’d suggest that a “spectrum” running from hard-left to bat-guano crazy left isn’t really a spectrum at all, and that the Left’s version of “moral clarity” — which involves jetting off to El Salvador on the taxpayer dime to drink margaritas with MS-13 gang members while staring at their feet when illegal immigrants rape and murder our women and girls — is unrecognizable to the rest of us.

Harris also trotted out the old standards, such as “tax breaks for the wealthiest among us,” and she decried the Trump administration’s encroachment on “truth and academic independence.” Here, we’d suggest that one person’s “truth and academic independence” is another person’s unwillingness to fund Jew-hatred and racist hiring and admissions processes on our nation’s college campuses.

But, again, this was Kamala Harris reading from a teleprompter, not sitting down directly across from a deeply antagonistic journalist as Donald Trump does almost weekly.

It was a study in contrasts between the vigorous president we have and the clueless one we might’ve had.
