Thomas Gallatin: Dems’ Disingenuous ‘Rule of Law’ Crisis

A prominent talking point that Democrats and their Leftmedia cohorts repeatedly used over the last couple of years, especially while defending the lawfare campaign against Donald Trump, is the statement that “no one is above the law.”

This is, of course, ironic given that Democrats’ relationship to laws, and more specifically, the U.S. Constitution, has long been typified by attempting to bend, work around, or downright ignore maintaining law and order.

Terms like “mostly peaceful protest” come to mind.

Yet one of the most egregious examples exposing the Democrats’ disdain for law and order is the issue of illegal immigration. Democrats have made a practice of conflating legal immigration with illegal immigration in order to confuse the issue and create sympathy for migrants of all stripes.

Seemingly every time conservatives have complained about illegal immigration, leftists throw out the statement, “Yeah, but we are a nation of immigrants.” As if to say that justifies breaking our nation’s laws.

It’s the Democrats’ willful conflation of legal immigration with illegal, effectively denying that the latter really exists, that explains why the U.S. finds itself in its present predicament. Fortunately, Trump has been more than willing to confront it head on.

The fact is, solving the border crisis and massive illegal immigration is not complicated. All it takes is the willingness to enforce America’s existing immigration laws. But that’s the rub.

When Eduardo Flores-Ruiz, a Mexican in the U.S. illegally, appeared before Milwaukee County Circuit Judge Hannah Dugan earlier this month on charges related to a domestic battery incident, it just so happened that federal immigration officials also turned up.

Upon learning that an ICE agent was waiting outside the courtroom, an apparently incensed Dugan left the courtroom to confront the agent and told him to leave. The ICE agent responded that he had every right to be there, so Dugan directed him to see the chief judge. The ICE agent obliged, and the chief judge confirmed that he did have the right to be in the hallway, which is considered a public place, where ICE agents have often made arrests of criminal illegal aliens.

While the ICE agent was checking with the chief judge, Dugan returned to her chambers and then snuck Flores-Ruiz and his lawyer out of the courtroom via the jury entrance and out of the courthouse through a side door to help him evade detainment.

Fortunately, federal officials outside the courthouse noticed and were able to chase down Flores-Ruiz and arrest him.

Dugan was subsequently arrested and charged with obstruction and concealing an individual from arrest. This was followed up by the Wisconsin Supreme Court, which holds a 4-3 liberal majority after its recent election, suspending Dugan from the bench until her case moves through the court.

This is how America’s legal system works, and yet Democrat lawmakers were once again quick to object. Wisconsin Democrat Governor Tony Evers blasted Dugan’s arrest, stating, “In this country, people who are suspected of criminal wrongdoing are innocent until their guilt is proven beyond a reasonable doubt.” That does not preclude one from facing arrest and charges when authorities literally witnessed the crime. He then ridiculously added, “I have deep respect for the rule of law, our nation’s judiciary, and the importance of judges making decisions impartially without fear or favor.” If that’s true, then why is he complaining about Dugan’s arrest?

Democrat Senators Tammy Baldwin (WI) and Amy Klobuchar (MN) also got in on the act by blaming Trump. “The president’s administration arresting a sitting judge is a gravely serious and drastic move, and it threatens to breach those very separations of power,” blustered Baldwin. Klobuchar asserted, “The administration’s arrest of a sitting judge in Wisconsin is a drastic move that threatens the rule of law.”

Really? Do these Democrats even know what the Rule of Law is? Haven’t Democrats been repeatedly telling the American people that “no one is above the law?” Apparently, they forgot to add the second part, “except for those whom Democrats favor.”

The Democrats are right about one thing: This is a Rule of Law issue. Yet if they were actually concerned about maintaining the Rule of Law, our country would not be dealing with millions of illegal aliens who have flowed into the country over the last four years. If Democrats were really concerned about law and order, they would make a sharp distinction between legal and illegal aliens, affirming the former while vigorously objecting to the latter. (They used to know the difference.) If they were doing so, their refrain of the U.S. being a land of immigrants could be taken seriously.

If what has been reported regarding Dugan is accurate, then it’s hard to see how she is not guilty of breaking the law. And if Evers, Baldwin, and Klobuchar are so concerned about upholding the Rule of Law, as this case works through the legal system, they’d better offer their support rather than politically motivated pot shots.
