Democratic star search sidelined by haunted past

The Washington Examiner’s Inside Scoop brings to life the pages of the Washington Examiner magazine. Host and magazine executive editor Jim Antle dives into the top news stories fit to print in each issue.

Harvard vs. Trump, written by Grant Addison, is the cover story for this week’s issue. Antle discusses President Donald Trump’s battle against elite educators with Washington Examiner editor-in-chief Hugo Gurdon. They break down the pros and cons of the administration’s higher education push.

“Part of what the Trump administration is trying to do is to bring universities into line, not necessarily with particular policies, but to restore their credibility,” Gurdon said. “In the last couple of years, we’ve seen extraordinary demonstrations of Jew-hatred and antisemitism. The Trump administration is trying to make sure the universities, which are receiving billions of dollars … fulfill, at least, basic minimum standards of freedom of expression, freedom of inquiry, and viewpoint diversity.”

Plus, Democrats are trying to look to the future, but are they too haunted by the past? Antle goes over Andrea Ruth‘s article, Star search: The future Democratic presidential field can’t escape the past, highlighting how the top contenders already seem to be flailing, especially with the hyperfocus on Kilmer Abrego Garcia. Dubbed a “Maryland man” by the apologetic Left, he is actually an MS-13 gang member Trump’s administration had deported to El Salvador. This is a situation in which Democrats are reinforcing a soft approach to illegal immigration that cost them last year’s election. Yet, Democratic political narratives suddenly appear to paint a criminal as some kind of political prisoner. Is this really something that is going to help Democrats win again?

INSIDE SCOOP: MARKET MAYHEM, MAKING BABIES, AND SPORTSMAN IN CHIEF

Finally, liberals lose it over Bill Maher’s Trump truce. Comedian and television host Bill Maher heads to the White House to break bread, but the Left is freaking out to see one of its own dining with Trump. One takeaway from Mr. Maher Goes to Washington: In this polarized age, the easiest way to get condemnation from the Left is the willingness to have a simple conversation.
