UN approves US-backed peace plan for Gaza

The United Nations adopted the United States’s proposal on Monday to begin implementing the next phase of President Donald Trump’s peace plan for Gaza.

Trump’s 20-point plan to achieve lasting stability in the region, which had been beset by hostilities between Hamas and Israel, gained international legitimacy after the 15-member council voted 13-0 in favor of a resolution endorsing the plan’s proposal for a temporary new government in Gaza.

Russia and China abstained from the vote, which supported the establishment of the “Board of Peace,” chaired by Trump as a transitional government, and the creation of a temporary “International Stabilization Force” in Gaza.

The multinational governing body, “a strong coalition of peacemakers,” will be responsible for overseeing the protection of civilians in Gaza. The ISF will also seek to advance the full demilitarization of Hamas, as well as the gradual and eventually complete withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza, which could prepare the way for “Palestinian self-determination and statehood,” according to the U.S. proposal.

The historic vote drew swift praise from Trump, but equally attracted censure from Hamas, which still retains control over much of Gaza. The terrorist group claimed it favored an Israeli occupation of Gaza.

“The resolution imposes an international guardianship mechanism on the Gaza Strip, which our people and their factions reject,” Hamas said in a statement on Telegram.

“Assigning the international force with tasks and roles inside the Gaza Strip, including disarming the resistance, strips it of its neutrality, and turns it into a party to the conflict in favour of the occupation,” the terrorist group continued. “Any international force, if established, must be deployed only at the borders to separate forces, monitor the ceasefire, and must be fully under UN supervision.”

The resolution gained the support of the Arab world after including references to an independent Palestine.

Trump thanked the U.N. for endorsing his plan, saying in a post to Truth Social that “this will go down as one of the biggest approvals in the History of the United Nations, will lead to further Peace all over the World, and is a moment of true Historic proportion!”

In remarks to the U.N. council, Mike Waltz, Trump’s ambassador to the United Nations, called the plan a “pragmatic blueprint” that offers the world a chance to replace “rubble where schools once stood” with “a path to peace.”

“This resolution charts a path for Palestinian self-determination after the Palestinian Authority completes key reforms,” Waltz said. “It dismantles Hamas’s grip and ensures Gaza rises free from terror’s shadow — prosperous and secure.”
