Massie targets FBI over Capitol Police Jan. 6 pipe bomb ‘scandal’

Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY) is questioning the Trump administration’s silence on allegations that the U.S. Capitol Police planted the pipe bombs discovered near the Capitol as the events of Jan. 6, 2021, unfolded.

Massie weighed in on the report Monday, claiming the FBI, CIA, and Capitol Police “are implicated in this story.” He continued to denounce leading figures in the Trump administration, including FBI Director Kash Patel and Attorney General Pam Bondi, as well as CIA Director John Ratcliffe, for their approach to the report, saying, “It’s been out three days and still no response.”

Questions have long been raised about the identity of the person seen in surveillance footage planting the two bombs near the headquarters of the Republican National Committee and Democratic National Committee the evening before Jan. 6.

A plainclothes Capitol Police officer was the person who first found the undetonated bomb near the DNC on the afternoon of Jan. 6, Massie revealed last year

A new twist in the case developed late last week, due to new allegations that forensic evidence suggests a Capitol Police officer planted the bombs before resigning from her job months later to work for the CIA.

When pressed on the report, the FBI did not address the allegations in a statement to the Washington Examiner. The investigation into who placed pipe bombs on Capitol Hill on Jan. 5, 2021, “remains a high priority for the FBI and our law enforcement partners,” the Bureau said.

“The tips we have received so far from the American people, including open source leads, have helped us advance the investigation with expediency and professionalism,” the agency added, urging “anyone who may have previously hesitated to come forward or who may not have realized they had important information to contact us and share anything relevant.”

The Capitol Police and Bondi’s office did not respond to a request for comment.

On Monday, Rep. Barry Loudermilk (R-GA), who heads the House select subcommittee on Jan. 6, raised additional questions about why a Secret Service sweep of the DNC area on the morning of Jan. 6 appeared to miss the pipe bomb the Capitol police officer found hours later.

“It is generally accepted that the pipe bombs acted as a means of diverting law enforcement resources away from the Capitol, notably at almost precisely the same time as protestors started to breach the Capitol perimeter,” Loudermilk wrote in a letter to Secret Service Director Sean Curran.

Massie most recently weighed in on the Jan. 6 pipe bombs this week after repeatedly pressing the Trump administration to address “sketchy circumstances” around the Jan. 6 pipe bombs in a slew of posts to X.

On Nov. 7 and 8, Massie called on Patel and other relevant figures to weigh in on the “scandal,” which he accused the FBI of “covering up” after the agency conducted a nearly five-year investigation into the pipe bombs with little success thus far at uncovering the suspect’s identity.

Massie made other posts accusing leadership at the FBI of being involved in investigating the matter after Jan. 6, including then-FBI Director Christopher Wray and then-FBI Washington field office Assistant Director Steven D’Antuono, of  “playing dumb” about the pipe bombs.

Massie said D’Antuono told the House Judiciary Committee during a 2023 interview that the “FBI couldn’t track the bomber because relevant cell data was corrupted.”

On Monday, Loudermilk, the Jan. 6 committee chairman, requested the Secret Service turn over all documents and communications relating “to a cellphone migration, system upgrade, or any other process or act by which employees of the United States Secret Service had their phones wiped of all electronic communications in the January–April 2021 time frame.”
